Welcome to Mrs. Sirena Kumabe's 2021-2022 SYPage

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to our new school year. Please read through the important documents and message from our principal, Ms. Sandra Watanabe on ‘Reopening School’ on our school’s website on the 21/22 School Year Tab. Please click on it and read the articles. Our school is following the Center for Disease Control Guiding Principles to Reopen School. In addition, we have to follow the Hawai’i State Department of Health Guidance for Schools, COVID-19.

It is imperative that you read through the important documents in the ‘Opening School’ document.

We continue to offer services for our preschoolers in a safe and healthy environment.  Please have your child practice wearing face mask when they return to school.   If you have concerns regarding your child’s health and safety and prefer distance learning, please let me know as soon as possible and I will work with you to set up a distance learning program for your child.  Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any concerns and questions.  I will try my best to address your concerns and questions.

Please see attached suggestions to help your child learn, our school online programs, links, daily home schedule which you can use, and other enrichment links. Updated weekly teaching schedule and home daily schedule will be updated shortly.  Feel free to use weekly teaching schedule and home daily schedule to set a routine and structure for your child once this is posted shortly.  We are awaiting Department of Education updates for COVID-19 regarding learning and programs. In the meantime, please use the resources and links provided to enrich your child's learning.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Sirena Kumabe

Tips for teaching daily lessons for parents or caregivers

Daily Lessons:

  1. Practice counting objects in the home environment from 1 to 10, 1 to 20, and 1 to 30 to challenge your child. For the younger ones, practice counting from 1 to 5 and then 1 to 10. In addition, you can also challenge your child to name numbers from 1 to 10 or 1 to 20 from number prints in your home.
  2. Practice singing the alphabet song and naming the letters of the alphabet. There are several YouTube links that are attached for you to practice with your child. Also, practice phonic songs and having your child give the sound of each letter of the alphabet.  See You Tube resources below.
  3. Have your child practice writing his/her name.  If your child is not ready yet, practice tracing his/her name with hand-over-hand assistance.  For children not ready to trace or write, please work on coloring and painting.  Use whatever materials you have for your child at home.
  4. Practice fine motor skills in coloring, writing (name, letters of the alphabet, numbers), tracing, scissors skills, play-doh, and puzzle solving.
  5. Read a book to your child daily. Links for e-books are in the resources below.  After you read aloud to your child, ask questions pertaining to the story.  Give time for your child to answer your question.  Model the correct answer in sentences if your child has difficulty answering in sentences.
  6. Have your child practice modeling your sentences to encourage verbal conversations and comprehension.  Also, work on vocabulary skills like the meaning of words.  In addition, work on picture vocabulary skills like naming objects, things, and pictures around their environment and books.
  7. Practice daily toileting skills at home for students who are not toilet-trained. This is to help reinforce daily toileting and self-care skills.
